Obituary for DOUGLAS JAMES WATERMAN

Douglas James Waterman, age 73, of Republic, Missouri, passed away on Thursday, March 29, 2018 in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Douglas, better known as Doug, Poppa, Dad, Papa, Uncle Doug, and his favorite, “Waterboy,” was born on October 18, 1944 in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of Jim and Mary Waterman.

His family settled down in Southwest Missouri and he graduated from Marionville High School. While attending college for three years, at what was then SMS, Doug’s goal was to be an architect and he was a wonderful artist. He had big dreams as we all do. Doug had very few occupations in his life time. He worked his way through college as a grocery store manager, and realized he wanted to be a truck driver, and a fine one he was. Doug took great pride in all that he did and you never had to worry about him calling in sick, for he rarely was.

For the past three and a half years, Doug had been a survivor of a massive heart attack and stroke. His strength and courage is an example to many. Doug loved life, from working in his yard, playing guitar, listening to country music, going to rodeo’s, and so much more.

Doug Waterman never met a stranger and everyone knew him. He could carry on with the best of jokes and another and another. Doug’s memory was so good he could tell you detailed stories of when he was three years old, what he had for dinner one night three weeks ago, and he could tell you how to get just about any place in the country, from being a truck driver (blind folded).

He has lived in Republic for 46 years, and was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Billings, Missouri. Doug dearly loved his parish family.

Doug was preceded in death by a son, Kurt Waterman; his parents; Jim and Mary; three brothers, Chuck, Steve, and most recently, Tom; a sister, Susan Peck; and a brother in law, Frank Herring.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Waterman; three sons and their spouses, Mark and Kara Waterman,, Chris and Carmen Waterman, and Jeff and Penny Waterman; grandchildren, Jillian and John, Amanda and Shane, Lacey, Todd, and Lauren, Megan and Rion, and Kurt; great grandchildren, Tenley, Kason, Joah, Jase, and Kyler; a sister and her spouse, Beth and Dave Miller; a brother and his spouse, Bruce and Tammi Waterman; an uncle, Bill Galway and spouse Mary Marg; an aunt, Ann Afdahl; two sister in laws, Patty Waterman and Rose Marie Herring; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Doug is today, and will always forever, be in our hearts. He has not left us for good, he has merely changed his address, and we will see each other again.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, April 1, 2018 in Meadors Funeral Home, Republic Chapel. A funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 2, 2018, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Billings, Missouri. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Republic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Maintenance Fund, P.O. Box 100, Billings, MO 65610.
