Obituary for JOHN OLAF OLSEN

Mr. John Olaf Olsen, age 70, of Republic, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 in Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Missouri. He was born on August 18, 1947 in Sparta, Wisconsin, the son of the late Frank Winston and LaFern Elaine (Hall) Olsen.

John served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Ann Green on February 19, 1989 in Lutz, Florida.

John was employed with Wonder Bread, having a sales route; and retired from Entenmann’s Sweets Bakery in the late 1990’s. After retirement, John worked as a certified nursing assistant in Wisconsin.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Republic, and had been a minister of music in various churches. He loved to play the harmonica, and enjoyed music. John had a love for people and never met a stranger. He made friends anywhere he went.

John is survived by his wife of 29 years, Cheryl, who now mourns the loss of her “best friend”; three children, Tami (Daryl) Weeks, John (Kathryn) Olsen II, and Shawn (Jess) Surrett; 11 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary (Douglas) Brandt, and Chris (Richard) Jansma; a brother in law, Steve (Sharon) Green; a sister in law, Mindy (Butch) East; and many other family and friends.

A graveside memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 4, 2018 in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield, under the direction of Meadors Funeral Home, Republic. A visitation will be from 3 to 4 p.m., with the memorial service at 4:00 p.m., also on Friday, May 4, 2018 in the First Baptist Church, Republic. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Grand Oak Baptist Mission Center, 2854 W. Grand, Springfield, MO 65802.
